Through our experience with our ongoing school programs, we feel the need to identify and honor those people who make a difference for their school community. These awards honor Angelenos who through their vision, courage and passion have selflessly given of their time and support to further the enrichment of the lives of our most precious resource, our children. The dignity and pride these people bestow on our children can only enrich the experience of all those who come in contact with the Los Angeles community.
Each day, hundreds of men and women contribute to raising the achievement of all children in their respective schools. The Getty House Foundation feels that awarding four LAUSD elementary school communities with the City of Angels Above and Beyond Awards, with a combined cash award value of $40,000, is a concrete way to acknowledge a school's attainment of positive participation of its principal, teachers, school staff, community, parents and students. Since the awards inception in 1997, Getty House Foundation has awarded over $225,000 to Los Angeles elementary schools for innovative programs promoting excellence in education.

Schools nominated for the Above and Beyond School Awards are selected based on the following criteria: innovative programs, parental/community involvement and professional development opportunities; intended use of the grant money; and representation of the City of Los Angeles’s ethnic and socio-economic diversity.
Since 1997, the Getty House Foundation has awarded more than $355,000 through its Above and Beyond School Awards.
