In 1996 Getty House Foundation was officially incorporated. The Foundation’s mission to focus on civics education, the preservation of the house, and community engagement serves as the guiding principle that has been implemented to this day.
The link between City Hall (the Mayor’s workplace) and Getty House (the Mayor’s official residence) made the house an anchor for education as well as a venue for hosting civic events. It serves as a family home, an official residence, and a living textbook to visiting students.
Getty House is an official field trip destination for fourth-graders in the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). The success of this program grew to include a visit to City Hall immediately following a tour of Getty House. At City Hall, students learn about the role of the Mayor, city council, and local government. They also discover architecture and learn about a well-known landmark. The experience in civics education is further emphasized through take-home educational materials and direct communication with the Mayor or the students’ respective city council member. Young visitors write letters to city officials, offering comments and suggestions for improving their neighborhoods.
The Foundation also makes grants to elementary schools in the LAUSD. The funds are awarded to innovative programs that enhance civics education in the classroom. Since 1997, the Foundation has awarded nearly half a million dollars.
People who make a difference are recognized by the Foundation through the City of Angels awards. These awards honor Angelenos who have selflessly given of their time and support to further enrich the lives of children and make Los Angeles a better place.
