Mayor James K. Hahn
James K. Hahn took office as Los Angeles’ 40th mayor on July 1, 2001. Mayor Hahn continued his campaign to protect children and abate violence, causes begun during his tenure as City Attorney. His dedication to children, youth, and their families is evident in his expansion and leadership of the after-school program, LA’s BEST, and in his vision for the Getty House Foundation.
Continuing with the Hahn administration, Getty House enjoyed an increased number of visits from local schoolchildren through a combination of the city’s after-school programs and the Getty House Foundation’s outreach efforts, which were launched during the Riordan administration. These included civics education, Art Days, Environmental Days, Reading Corner, and special holiday events such as Fourth of July and Easter.
With support from Mayor Hahn, the Getty House Foundation continued its annual event to benefit education and children’s programs. The event was changed from a daytime luncheon to a nighttime gala, and took on the theme of Mardi Gras.
Several official activities were held at Getty House, including the Hispanic Heritage Foundation’s Youth Awards and the luncheon for the Consular Corps. Visiting dignitaries included Roh Moo-hyun, President of South Korea; Carlos Rivas Zamora, Mayor of San Salvador; and the Panama Trade Delegation.
