ELIGIBILITY & REQUIREMENTS
Getty House Foundation (GHF) invites applications for civic and social studies education grants to benefit 3rd, 4th and/or 5th graders in schools within the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). Grants up to $2,500 for single applications and up to $5,000 for joint applications are available.
KEY DATES
Applications will be accepted November 1 – December 9, 2011. Applicants must use the GHF’s online application. No late applications will be accepted. Awards will be announced on or before January 31, 2012. Recipients will be notified by email. Visit GettyHouse.org in March 2012 to view the list of recipients.
ELIGIBILITY
Ambitious and dedicated teachers, librarians, school media specialists, and/or administrators employed by an elementary school within LAUSD may apply. The proposed program or project must directly serve students in grades 3, 4 and/or 5 in the applicant’s current school, and be implemented anytime between February 1 and June 30, 2012. GHF encourages partnership and teamwork.
Therefore, projects to be implemented by more than one instructor, which will directly serve multiple classrooms within the same school, will be considered for funding up to $5,000. Projects serving one classroom will be considered for funding up to $2,500.
PURPOSE OF GRANTS AND FUNDING CRITERIA
GHF Civic Education Grants are intended to inspire and engage students in civic and social studies education. Imagination and creativity in regard to the proposed projects are encouraged. Grants can be used, for example only, for classroom instruction in civic education, government and/or Los Angeles political history; class projects in community service, which enhance civics and social studies curriculum; or activities for student civic engagement or participation.
Specifically, funds may be used for anything that can realistically enhance the educational experience and actively engage students in meaningful civic or government learning opportunities inside or outside the classroom. For example, grants can assist with the purchase of educational materials, books, videos, CDs, DVDs, computer software, and other educational resources to be owned and used by the school, as well as funding civic- and government-related field trips.
Past projects that have received funding include studies of the Founding Fathers, civics books for school libraries, electronic “field trips” to Colonial Williamsburg, mock mayoral and city council elections, and mock trials to study the judicial branch of government.
The proposed program or project must align with California curriculum standards. Funds must support short-term or special projects/programs or component(s) of longer term projects/programs, which can be completed within the grant use timeline, i.e., February 1 – June 30, 2012.
REVIEW PROCESS
Applications will be reviewed by the GHF Education Committee and their recommendations will be submitted to the GHF Board of Directors. Funding decisions are final.
FINAL REPORT REQUIREMENT
Grant recipients will be required to submit a Final Report within thirty days of completion of the project or program, but no later than July 31, 2012. The Final Report should include a copy of any final lesson plans and be accompanied by photos, samples of student work and/or other documentation related to the completed project or program. Upon acceptance of and/or use of GHF grant funds, the recipient and/or its agent agrees that not adhering to the funding requirements as described by GHF may disqualify applicants from future eligibility.
Recipients agree that their submitted materials become the physical property of GHF and may be discarded or used, in part or in whole, by GHF for non-commercial, educational and/or promotional purposes. Recipients should, therefore, submit only copies and not originals as submitted materials will not be returned.
